Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a type of neck surgery that involves removing a damaged disc to relieve spinal cord or nerve root pressure and decrease corresponding pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling.

The surgery has 2 parts:

  • Anterior cervical discectomy.The surgery is approached through the front of the neck. The disc is then removed, and spinal cord and nerves are relieved of pressure.

 

  • FusionA fusion surgery is done at the same time as the discectomy operation in order to stabilize the cervical segment. It is a process where bone graft obtained from patient is used to cause 2 opposing bony surfaces to grow and fuse together to form one single unit. This prevents any future abnormal motion or deformity in between the bones which can occur after disc is removed.
