Laminectomy and Discectomy
This is the traditional way of treating disc problems (sciatica) and lumbar canal stenosis (condition in which nerves are compressed – clinically patient has low back pain and is not able to walk long distances because of leg pain and numbness) This procedure is performed through an skin cut down the center of the back over the area of the problem. The doctor cuts a small opening through the bone or removes it partially. This procedure gives the doctor enough room to see and work inside the spinal canal. Upon locating the problem disc, the surgeon removes it, easing pressure and irritation on the nerves of the spine. Small instruments are used to remove as much of it as possible. This prevents the remaining disc material from coming out in the future.
