Low back pain is the most common symptom a patient presents to our OPD. In fact, it is one of the most common conditions overall for which medical care is sought. It could stem from several causes.

Muscle strains, ligament and joint sprains and disc ruptures are the most common reasons for acute low backache. These injuries may cause very severe low back pain to present, but most of them are very benign and heal quickly. The most common reasons for this kind of injury are unaccustomed bending or weight lifting activity. These kinds of injuries heal by Medicines and physiotherapy and usually will not last more than six weeks.

Another most common cause of LBA is muscle weakness. This usually leads to mechanical low backache in which the exact cause cannot be identified even with higher-end investigations.  Inadequate hydration, sleep, physical activity, inappropriate mattress, and sleeping postures, sitting inappropriately, and long hours increase the chances of low backache.

Other common reasons for the backache are disc degeneration (disc loses its elasticity and pressure absorbing capacity), spine Instability (slipping of one vertebral bone over the other), spine infections, spine tumors, and inflammatory conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis and DISH (In systematic inflammatory diseases of the spine the mobility of the spine is decreased). These problems tend to have persistent low backache lasting more than 6-12 weeks. Each of these problems is explained in different sections below.
